WEEK 1: INTRODUCTION TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
The Week 1 Sejahtera session helped me gain a clearer understanding of what sustainable development truly means and why it is important in today’s world. Although I joined the class in Week 3, I made the effort to watch the recorded Week 1 lecture provided by our lecturer, Prof. Dr. Suhaimi, through iTa’leem in order to catch up on the course content.
Through the lecture, I learned that sustainability involves meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. Sustainable development requires a balance between environmental conservation, economic development, and social sustainability. These three pillars are closely connected and play an important role in creating a healthy environment, a supportive society and a stable economy.
The lecture also discussed how sustainable development has evolved over time, from the Millennium Development Goals to the current 17 Sustainable Development Goals. I found it interesting to see how global efforts have become more comprehensive in addressing development challenges. In addition, the 5Ps - People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership served as a helpful guide in understanding how sustainability aims to create a better future for everyone. This session helped me gain a clearer foundation on sustainable development and its importance in shaping a balanced and responsible future.
The explanation of the 5Ps is simple and easy to understand. It gives a good foundation for understanding sustainable development.
